Suing over Shampoo? Legal entanglements over ingredients

Have you suffered from scalp irritation and/or hair loss after using a keratin shampoo?

There is a class action suit that has been filed against manufacturers that have used ingredients that harm scalp and hair. How is that possible?

First-what is Keratin?

Keratin is the primary protein found in hair, nails, and skin.

Due to its connection with hair growth, many hair care products contain keratin and claim to make hair stronger and healthier.

Why Keratin Shampoos Cause Hair Loss -what is added ?

Although keratin is often used in products such as shampoos, some consumers argue that these products can lead to scalp irritation and subsequent hair loss.

The cause of these issues may be the ingredient, DMDM Hydantoin.

DMDM Hydantoin is a preservative which may release traces of formaldehyde – a known carcinogen – causing irritation to the scalp. In fact, due to this mechanism, the Environmental Working Group’s Skin Deep database rates DMDM Hydantoin at a 6 out of 10 with a high allergy and immunotoxicity warning.

In addition to being a known carcinogen, formaldehyde may cause scalp irritation. If the scalp is irritated and inflamed, significant hair loss can occur.

Although keratin is prized as a promising hair care ingredient and is used in numerous hair treatments, keratin shampoos may cause scalp irritation and hair loss due to concerning ingredients.

DMDM Hydantoin, a preservative found in some keratin shampoos, can reportedly release traces of formaldehyde – a known carcinogen which may contribute to scalp irritation and hair loss. As it would make sense to us to purchase keratin for hair benefits, we don’t see why we need the addition of preservatives that are actually harmful.

The Contact Dermatitis Institute advises us about certain products, even though used for personal care and beauty; have ingredients that cause irritations or allergic reactions to people. This educational institute provides a database of listed additives and elements used in skin and hair care.

The Contact Dermatitis Institute Allergen Database was designed as a wiki-like resource for information regarding allergic contact dermatitis. The goal is for physicians to both add and search for information regarding specific allergens and topics. It really is important to know what is in a concoction that is waiting for you to purchase. Feel good knowing you are saving your body and hair from chemical additives.
